Lakeland is a beautiful city in the Northeast corner of Shelby County, which over 13,000 residents currently call home. Garner Lake (the largest lake in the county) was actually built as the centerpiece to the Lakeland Amusement Park, which was dubbed the “Disneyworld of the Mid-South” and was open from 1960-1976. Lakeland was incorporated in 1977, after the amusement park closed. Before the lake and the amusement park, the city really doesn’t have much history. It was rolling farmland, so there is no historic town square, old general store, civil war site, or historic homestead. There are still some signs of the park around town today, but for the most part, you will find a lakeside city with beautiful scenery and a low crime rate. The homes were all relatively new and you will find this beautiful community has a small town feel and views that are hard to beat!
